You may agree, you may not, but you’ve heard it before – breakfast is the most important meal of the day. It also happens to be my favorite. It’s a meal I can rely on – salty options, sweet options and everything in between. Growing up being a picky eater, it was nice to always know I could order eggs or a pancake no matter where I was. Call me boring – but trust me on this one…[borrringgg]
In the city, there are endless options of where to eat. For a vanilla gal like me, this can be overwhelming… so I started in my comfort zone. Endless options also exist for those pre-noon hours and the menus are flawless. Whether you are looking to grab a quick bite or looking for a full on brunch affair – here’s what you need to get:
On the run
My personal favorite is sausage, egg & cheese on whole wheat everything – tip is to get muenster – you’ll thank me later. You also can’t go wrong with the signature favorite – nova, scallion cream cheese, capers – talk about a New York bagel. [everything toasted plain cc + capers and tomatoes… you’re welcome]
I know it’s ironic – but for how much I love breakfast, I hate coffee… However, I do like a good Chai Latte and Gregory’s puts Starbucks to shame (even though I love Starbies, don’t get me wrong). [literally no one on earth calls it Starbies…] This local NYC chain also has a great Turmeric Latte – just don’t spill it on your crisp white shirt.
Three words: Peanut Butter & Jelly. [I think that’s four words??] Now, this is going to be like a treasure hunt because some locations have taken this off of the menu – but if you can find it, don’t miss out. It sounds like a kids lunch but it’s a dream. [go for the smash, best avo toast I’ve had in a while]
There is nothing better than an authentic diner breakfast. You can’t go to Brooklyn diner without getting Challah bread – please. It comes with basically everything – don’t choose the bagel… avoid the urge. [bread is my weakness though…]
This NYC staple is known for its melt in your mouth pancakes. They are tiny – so load up on the sides (home fries are incredible) but don’t skip them. You can watch the carbs tomorrow.
Clinton St. Baking Company
The most authentic food – all locally sourced and made in house. Their menu is changing constantly but you really can’t go wrong. This will be the freshest food you’ve ever started your day with. If you can get the Chicken & Waffles – run, don’t walk.
Grab a mimosa
This may be my favorite place in the city. My sister makes fun of me for how often I go here. [true statement] So I have a long list: thick cut pork belly bacon, truffle fries, smoked salmon, burrata, RH burger, roasted half chicken, and last but NOT least the truffled grilled cheese. Yes, that was a lot. Yes, I have ordered all of that in one sitting. Don’t play with me.
Sunday in Brooklyn
Get a reso otherwise you’ll be waiting a solid two hours – but it’ll be worth it. This cute Brooklyn brunch spot has the best biscuits & gravy. That’s being said by this southern girl who grew up on Bojangles (how I wish I could add that to this list… please come to NY). [LOL!] The cheddar scramble is also a top pick. Pair it with the Sunday Bloody – worth it.
I never liked fish for breakfast until I moved to NYC – and Sadelles is why. Literally the freshest salmon I have ever had… also caviar? Am I bougie? I guess the city has changed me for good. [the lox tower is a great girls brunch sharing option.] They also have classic breakfast staples like their french toast and blueberry pancakes.
What other breakfast spots should make the list? I need to know for my next cheat day.
