I am not on trend [this should be good…]. I don’t know what’s cool right now – high waisted jeans? Low rise jeans? Jean skirts? Overalls?! I can’t keep up.
I felt like I’ve always just ‘gotten by’ when it comes to fashion. It truly is my sister’s department, so when in doubt I just send her a pic and ask if it’s good or not. I even went through a phase where I just gave her a monthly budget and let her do my shopping for me! [truth… and I don’t know why I didn’t make a profit off of this] Oh yeah, that’s another thing I’m not into… shopping… I know I’ve probably lost a lot of you at this point, but stick with me.
Here’s the thing, ever since I moved to NYC I knew that I had to step it up. I couldn’t just ‘get by’ anymore living here. I’m shocked even to see what people are wearing walking their dogs! I’m one step up from my pjs and the girl next to me is in a full Lululemon set. The effort!! I had to find the cheat sheet…
Get Influenced
First, I knew I needed to somehow have an eye on what stylish people are putting on these days. So I did a bit of research and started following a few accounts which have good style and are realistic. If you want a one stop shop, and you haven’t already, you have to follow LIKEtoKNOW.it and download their app.
They have so many awesome creators and outfit curators that do all the research and link it all for you [it’s dangerous for your wallet too]. I’m in the app before any event just searching “rehearsal dinner”, “girls night”, “baby shower” so that I know I’m not going to be showing up in last seasons Jimmy Choos (I just wanted to sound like Miranda Priestly there… I don’t own Jimmy Choos). [LOL]
Shop Online
This is the kicker for me. I can’t stand shopping in stores. Unless I know exactly what I’m going in for so that I can get in and out (ideally ordering ahead), I get too overwhelmed. The endless browsing. The lines. The dressing rooms I never use. The returns. Who likes this?!
It was important for me to find my go to online stores that had it all – from sweats to dresses. SHEIN is my go to right now. Their clothes are always trendy and great for a budget conscious girl like me. They have a bit of a shipping lead time and your picks may only last a season – but the trends seem to be changing that often anyway! Lulus and, of course, Amazon are always a good go-to as well.
Rent it
This was the best part for me. If you’ve been living under a rock and haven’t checked out Rent the Runway yet, allow me to enlighten you. You have a personal stylist suggesting pieces for your needs and you get them freshly dry cleaned and delivered to your door to send back when you’re done. You’ve worn the trendiest pieces and will never repeat. You’re automatically best dressed in your office. You’re welcome. [no, YOU’RE welcome since I was the one who enlightened and elevated your look]
Other personal styling services like Stitch Fix and Trunk Club are also clutch for an anti-shopper like me. They’re stylists clearly know what they’re doing too because I would always end up buying every piece they sent me to try on instead of sending it back. Consider yourself warned!!
I now feel confident with what I wear when I’m walking the pup – fake it till you make it people!! Any other good style guides you use?
