Fall means pumpkin patches, apple picking, and all things flannel! Over the years we have found some nice (and not so crowded) spots to take the kids for fall activities. All are easy escapes from the city – less than an hour and a half. [Add alcohol and sounds good for the adults too]
Here are a few that we love and why we love them. The season for pumpkin patches and apple picking is coming to an end so try to get out there before mid November!
Secor Farms
Distance: Approximately 45 minutes from the city by car. Public transport is possible but not as easy as driving.
Activities: There are plenty of things here to keep the kids entertained. Hayrides are the most popular and are running through the end of October. They also have a hay maze which is great for younger kids, and to get some energy out before the car ride home! [if that hay maze is haunted at any point, I’ll absolutely be there]
Outside of that, your normal pumpkin patches and farmers market items are available for sale. It’s an easy trip and well worth the drive!
Apple Dave’s Orchards
Distance: Approximately 90 minutes from the city, but you can make a full day out of being in the area.
Activites: If you’re looking for apple picking at its prime, this is where you should go! There are many varieties of apples to pick [are there more than red and green?], and also a lovely rose garden you can walk around. The best way to spend the day is to pack a picnic lunch. You can set out your blanket, enjoy lunch and picking apples, as well as sweets and cider from the farm store.
Wards Pumpkin Patch
Distance: Approximately 45 minutes from the city by car. Public transport is possible but not as easy as driving.
Activities: For a simple and fun pumpkin patch this is a great spot. Here you’ll find pumpkins and squash selections. [do people actually go for the squash?!] Although the farm is very nice, this does have the least amount of activity in one place, compared to some of the other farms and patches out there.
Alstede Farms
Distance: About one hour from the city and you can take public transit if you’d like.
Activities: If you want a one stop shop for everything fall, this is it. Pumpkin patches, farm life, cider mill, and ice cream stand to name a few. It’s well worth the crowds but you can beat them if you go early enough on the days they are open – better yet on a weekday. [bring your masks!]
What are some of your go to fall activities for memories, or just a good photo opp? Let us know so we can plan for them next fall!
